  • Dynamic Comovement between Indian Commodity Futures, Economic Policy Uncertainty and Geopolitical Risk: Evidence from Wavelet Analysis

International Journal of Economics and Financial Issues, 2025
The present study examines the dynamic comovements between two global risk factors and commodity futures returns. The study considers the daily futures price of nine commodities spanning from January 4th, 2012 to September 29th, 2023. The study employs wavelet analysis and wavelet- based Granger causality tests to analyze dynamic comovement and causal relationship between global risk factors and commodity futures return at different time horizons. The study results show a strong comovement between the US economic policy uncertainty (USEPU) and commodity futures return except for silver and mentha oil. On the other hand, the geopolitical risk (GPR) exhibits a weak relationship with gold, lead, zinc, and energy commodities across all-time frequencies. Further, the Wavelet Granger causality test results provide strong evidence that commodities futures return cause the USEPU in all the time horizons. Followed by the geopolitical risk reports significant evidence that commodities futures return causes GPR in all time horizons.
  • Do Islamic indices have connectedness with commodity futures? Implications for portfolio strategies and hedging effectiveness: evidence from India
    Thilaga M., Veeravel V., K. Prabhakar Rajkumar
International Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Finance and Management, 2025
Purpose This study aims to examine the dynamic return connectedness between Shariah Islamic indices and commodity futures returns. Further, the study also explores the possible implications for portfolio strategies and hedging effectiveness in the Indian context. Design/methodology/approach We mainly focus on four major Shariah Islamic indices and nine actively traded non-agricultural commodities daily closing prices data spanning from 6th May 2014 to 29th September 2023. The authors employ a novel time-varying parameter vector autoregression connectedness model, as well as minimum variance portfolio (MVP), minimum correlation portfolio (MCP), minimum connectedness portfolio, and hedging efficiency models to construct optimal portfolios using Shariah Islamic indices and commodities futures returns. Findings The study results show a strong dynamic return connectedness between Shariah Islamic indices and commodity futures returns. However, the net return spillover results suggest that Nifty 500 Shariah and Nifty Shariah 25 are the highest net spillover transmitters to commodity futures returns. On the other hand, commodities such as gold, crude oil and natural gas are the highest net recipients of return spillovers. Besides, the portfolio strategies and hedging effectiveness results document that gold has the highest weight under both MVP and MCP models. Practical implications The present study offers useful insights for investors and portfolio managers on constructing optimal portfolios using hedging techniques to efficiently manage the risks associated with their portfolios. Second, the findings indicate that incorporating Shariah Islamic indices and commodities into their portfolios could provide better diversification and timely risk mitigation. Finally, the results provide pertinent information for market regulators to understand how the Islamic Shariah indices and commodity markets respond to unprecedented events. Originality/value This could be the maiden attempt in the Indian context to test the dynamic return connectedness, portfolio strategies and hedging effectiveness of Shariah Islamic indices and commodity futures returns.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays a very important role in the development of the nation. It is very much vital in the case of underdeveloped and developing countries. A typical characteristic of these developing and underdeveloped economies is the fact that these economies do not have the needed level of savings and income in order to meet the required level of investment needed to sustain the growth of the economy. In such cases, foreign direct investment plays an important role in bridging the gap between the available resources or funds and the required resources or funds. It plays an important role in the long-term development of a country not only as a source of capital, but also for enhancing competitiveness of the domestic economy through transfer of technology, strengthening infrastructure, raising productivity and generating new employment opportunities. In India, FDI is considered as a developmental tool, which helps in achieving self-reliance in various sectors and in the overall development of the economy. India after liberalizing and globalizing the economy to the outside world in 1991, there was a massive increase in the flow of foreign direct investment. The present paper attempts to analyze the significance of the FDI Inflows in Indian service sector since 1991 and relating the growth of service sector FDI in the generation of employment in terms of skilled and unskilled. The services sector is not only the dominant sector in India’s GDP, but has also attracted significant foreign investment flows, contributed significantly to exports as well as provided large-scale employment. India’s services sector covers a wide variety of activities such as trade, hotel and restaurants, transport, storage and communication, financing, insurance, real estate, business services, community, social and personal services, and services associated with construction.
