Springer Science and Business Media LLC
AbstractMangrove damage is caused by environmental changes in the surrounding area as well as direct and indirect pressures on the existence of mangroves. The preservation of mangrove forests is inseparable from the perceptions and behavior of the community in managing and utilizing mangrove forests. Community decisions to take action in the environment will be rooted in the reciprocal relationship created between humans and their environment. This research investigates the history of mangrove management and the ecological perspectives, attitudes, and perceptions of communities toward managing and utilizing mangroves and compares the management and ecology of two mangrove areas in Lampung Province, Indonesia. This study used structured questionnaires with 97 respondents in Margasari and 48 in Sidodadi who live around mangrove forests. The question related to utilizing mangrove ecology, community perceptions of mangrove forests, and participation in mangrove management. The results showed that the people of Margasari and Sidodadi had positive perceptions of mangrove forests. The number and frequency of people participating in mangrove management in Sidodadi were higher than those in Margasari, but in general, the participation in both villages was low. Neither village utilizes mangrove timber. The utilization of nontimber mangrove products in Margasari is more diverse than in Sidodadi; Margasari has ten types of utilization, while Sidodadi has only four types. The condition of mangrove vegetation cover during the last ten years has the same trend; mangrove cover area has decreased, although there was a slight increase in Sidodadi. Different factors influence the decrease; in Margasari, it is influenced by natural factors, while in Sidodadi, it is influenced by human factors.

  • The influence of branding on tourist interest in Petengoran Mangrove Ecotourism

    IOP Publishing
Abstract Products in the form of services, such as ecotourism, rarely create branding for their business. As branding is important to increase tourist interest to visit, this research aims to identify the branding activities carried out by the manager and analyse the branding of Petengoran Mangrove Ecotourism in relation to the interest of tourists visiting. Data collection was through interviews with two key informants and questionnaires distributed to 80 tourists from December 2022-January 2023. The analytical methods used were descriptive qualitative and Structural Equation Modeling with the Partial Least Square methods. Based on research, the ecotourism manager created the brand using a logo and social media to disseminate information about Petengoran Mangrove Ecotourism. The three variables used to explain branding in this study, namely brand personality, brand positioning, and brand relationship, show a positive and significant effect on tourist interests. However, several indicators included in the three variables, such as sincerity, excitement, competence, sophistication in brand personality variables, uniqueness in brand positioning, and commitment in brand relationship, have no effect and must be improved to increase tourist interest in Petengoran Mangrove Ecotourism.

  • Agroforestry for biodiversity and climate change mitigation in Batutegi Protection Forest, Lampung, Indonesia

Abstract. Heryandi, Qurniati R, Darmawan A, Yuliasari V. 2022. Agroforestry for biodiversity and climate change mitigation in Batutegi Protection Forest, Lampung, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 1611-1620. The conversion of protected forests into farm areas decreases biodiversity and increases greenhouse gases. Planting trees using agroforestry patterns desire to overcome these problems. This study aimed to identify plant composition, biodiversity, and calculated carbon stock values to recommend a better agroforestry development. The data collection was carried out in June 2021 from four farmer group associations at Batutegi Protection Forest Management Unit, namely Mahardika, Sinar Harapan, Hijau Makmur, and Cempaka. The agroforestry pattern applied in four Gapoktans is agrisilviculture, with a combination of crops, plantation, and forest trees. The dominant plant species are coffee, pepper, rubber, and bananas. Based on the Importance Value Index, coffee becomes the dominant crop in Hijau Makmur, Mahardika, and Sinar Harapan, while rubber is the dominant crop in Cempaka. The agroforestry pattern applied by respondents has a higher carbon stock value than the average carbon stock of coffee-based agroforestry in Indonesia, but the diversity index value is lower. Improving biodiversity is necessary to optimize growing space in farmer land through species enrichment under existing land and plant conditions.

  • Poverty distribution of different types of forest-related communities: Case study in Wan Abdul Rachman forest park and mangrove forest in Sidodadi Village, Lampung Province, Indonesia

Abstract. Qurniati R, Darmawan A, Utama RB, Inoue M. 2019. Poverty distribution of different types of forest-related communities: Case study in Wan Abdul Rachman Forest Park and mangrove forest in Sidodadi Village, Lampung Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3153-3163. Forest has important role in community because it can influence social characteristics as well as the quality of life of the household. In the tropics, many people living around forest are in poor conditions. Sidodadi Village of Pesawaran District, Lampung Province bordered to Wan Abdul Rachman (WAR) Forest Park in the upland and mangrove forest in the coastal area represents a good case study of communities living adjacent to forests with different ecosystem type. The research objective was to identify and analyze the characteristics and the level of household poverty of community living around two forested areas (i.e. upland forest in WAR Forest Park versus mangrove forest) in Sidodadi Village. In this village, households were interviewed by randomly selecting 215 respondents. The poverty was analyzed using five indicators, i.e. the economic characteristics, material wealth, health, infrastructure and services, and knowledge. The study found that base on the aggregated five poverty indicators there were no households categorized as poor. However, analyses in each indicator had diverse results. Based on the indicators of knowledge and economic characteristics, we found that most respondents were classified as poor while based on three other indicators there were classified as rich. The poor knowledge level was dominantly in older people who have low formal and informal education, while poverty in terms of economic characteristics due to limited opportunity to have better livelihood. Results also indicate that the poor households were located near mangrove forests while those classified as rich were located near upland forest in WAR Forest Park. The rich households had better opportunities to earn income from limited uses of forest in the upland area, yet similar opportunities were not obtained from mangrove forests. Sustainable use of mangrove forests should be considered to support the livelihood option of the surrounding community to enhance their wealth.

The people who live adjacent to Tahura Wan Abdul Rachman depend their lives on land management in the block utilization of Tahura with the agroforestry system. This system is implemented with different plant compositions so that the effect on income is different. This study aims to determine the composition of agroforestry plants that provide the highest income and welfare level for farmers. The study was conducted in 2017 in Sidodadi Village, Pesawaran District, which borders Tahura Wan Abdul Rahman. The variables analyzed consisted of revenue and production costs in the management of agroforestry, farmer expenditure and the number of family member. The results obtained from the 7 plant compositions identified, composition II with the main plants of banana and cacao and other types of plants are clove, chili, areca nut, soursop, mango, rambutan, durian, coconut, pecan, duku, jengkol, petai, avocado, nutmeg , breadfruit, sugar palm, bayur and cempaka; provide the highest income with an average income of Rp. 21,640,777/family/year but this income is still in a sufficient category and is only limited to meeting basic needs. It is the composition of plants that are most widely used by the community. Keywords: agroforestry, income, plant composition, welfare
