  • A comprehensive study of recent studies on the efficiency of axial flow turbines with an investigation on blade profile modifications in stator and rotor assemblies

    Wind Engineering, 2025
Axial flow turbines are crucial in energy production and propulsion across diverse applications. As global energy needs rise, optimizing turbine efficiency is paramount. This review delves into the aerodynamic design of turbine blades, specifically examining blade profile modifications in both stator and rotor assemblies of state-of-the-art models proposed in the studies from 2019 to 2024. The focus is on mitigating performance discrepancies between idealized simulations and real-world applications, which present significant challenges such as inconsistencies in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions and manufacturing constraints. Key findings from this review highlight a potential efficiency gain of 1%–3% through optimal blade designs that reduce incidence losses, secondary flows, and tip vortex formation. Advanced modeling techniques, including high-fidelity, multi-objective optimization with machine learning, are evolving to better predict and enhance turbine performance. However, gaps remain in system-level integration and the limited experimental data restricts comprehensive validation of these new designs. The insights from this review will aid the research community by identifying critical areas for future investigation, such as integrating blade aerodynamics with heat transfer and structural mechanics. Further, it emphasizes the need for exploring combinations of passive and active flow control strategies to fully harness the benefits of blade profile enhancements. These efforts are crucial for achieving substantial improvements in turbine efficiency, which are essential for meeting the growing demands for sustainable and efficient energy production.
  • Evaluation of traditional and slotted winglets for enhanced aerodynamic efficiency
Dhanya Prakash R. Babu, D. Madhesh, Inamul Hasan, R. Mukesh
    Physics of Fluids, 2025
Minimizing drag is a critical focus in aviation, significantly influencing energy efficiency and performance. Lift-induced drag accounts for approximately 40% of total drag during cruise flight and 80%–90% during takeoff phase. Enhancing the coefficient of lift-to-drag ratio which is also termed as aerodynamic efficiency is a proven approach to reducing energy consumption in aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. Wingtip devices, such as winglets, offer a practical solution by mitigating induced drag generated by wingtip vortices. This study investigates the aerodynamic performance of three configurations: a plain wing, a wing with a traditional winglet, and a wing with a slotted winglet. The analysis was conducted using computational fluid dynamics software at angles of attack ranging from −4° to 12°, with velocities of 20 and 270 m/s, corresponding to Reynolds numbers of 2.5 × 106 and 3.3 × 107, respectively. Results demonstrated that the traditional winglet achieved a 4% average improvement in aerodynamic efficiency, while the slotted winglet exhibited a 3.16% enhancement over the plain wing. Energy consumption was reduced by 4% and 3.16% with traditional and slotted winglets, respectively. These findings validate the effectiveness of winglets in improving aerodynamic efficiency and provide insight for optimizing wingtip device design.
  • Influence of rough surfaces on airfoil aerodynamics and the ground effect on near-wall flow
Dhanya Prakash R. Babu, D. Madhesh, Inamul Hasan, R. Mukesh
    Physics of Fluids, 2025
Agricultural aircraft play a pivotal role in crop dusting and aerial applications of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, where their close proximity to crop surfaces during operations has significant implications. These interactions affect not only crop safety and treatment efficacy but also environmental impact and operational optimization. This study investigates the aerodynamic interactions between an airfoil and a rough surface, representing crops, focusing on the dual effects of airfoil proximity on surface flow dynamics and the influence of the rough wall on airfoil aerodynamics. A computational framework employing overset (Chimera) mesh for a movable airfoil is developed and rigorously validated against experimental data. Using this validated model, we examine the aerodynamic consequences of proximity, revealing that the rough wall substantially modifies the flow field around the airfoil, altering lift and drag characteristics. Conversely, the airfoil's motion significantly influences wall shear stress and surface flow patterns on the rough wall. These findings provide new insights into the coupled dynamics of airfoil aerodynamics and wall effects, offering a basis for optimizing agricultural aircraft operations while mitigating environmental and crop impacts.

Pertanika Journal of Science and Technology, 2024
Investigation of ground effects on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) are limited. The UAV's ground effect on the water surface and irregular surfaces has not been studied well. The principal objective of this research is to apply numerical solutions to investigate the flow physics and aerodynamic characteristics of selected NACA4412 airfoil for different h/c and surface roughness conditions in the ground effect scenario. The k-ω turbulence model and compressible RANS equations are solved using the Finite Volume Method (FVM). The simulated data is authenticated with the reference data and compared with the DATCOM data. The results express that the lift coefficient variations for various surface roughness are affected by the h/c proportion. The drag coefficient for various roughness has the same pattern for different ratios and almost has the same difference from high to lower values. The result shows that the DATCOM code cannot predict the aerodynamic characteristics with ground effects.
