Impact of Shadowing in Relayed Hybrid FSO-mmWave RF Transmission System Banibrata Bag, Moumita Jana, Himadri Sekhar Das, Akinchan Das 2025 IEEE Guwahati Subsection Conference Gcon 2025, 2025 Integrating free space optics (FSO) and millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology presents a promising solution for far-field wireless communication. This paper analyzes a relayed FSO-mmWave RF downlink system in a line-of-sight (LoS) blockage terrain, exercising a decode-and-forward (DF) protocol. The Free Space Optics (FSO) link uses a Gamma-Gamma (G-G) distribution to address atmospheric turbulence and pointing inaccuracies, while the millimeter-wave (mmWave) RF link is characterized by a generalized K (G-K) distribution to account for fading and shadowing. We estimate the system’s performance in terms of outage probability, average BER, and capacity. Additionally, computer simulations of each metric are furnished to confirm our analytical findings. The results highlight the significant impact of shadowing in the RF link and atmospheric turbulence, and pointing errors in the FSO link. This reflects the necessity for maintaining high-quality FSO and RF links for reliability.
Channel Capacity for IRS-assist Wireless Communication System for 5G and Beyond Moumita Jana, Akinchan Das, Sanjay Kumar Proceedings of 2023 IEEE 3rd Applied Signal Processing Conference Aspcon 2023, 2023 The Smart radio environment or Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) technique is the most arising technology for next-generation wireless standards due to the enriching abilities of the physical layer performance of the communication system. The mathematical framework of various types of channel capacity has been derived depending on the existence of channel state information (CSI) on the transmitter and receiver terminal in the proposed IRS-assist wireless communication system in this article. In this aspect, the Optimal Rate Adaption (ORA), Optimal Power and Rate Adaption (OPRA), Channel Inversion with Fixed Rate (CIFR), and Truncated Channel Inversion with Fixed Rate (TIFR), four various channel capacity policies are introduced here. Next, the combined influence of phase shift and quantization error on the different channel capacities has been observed under the proposed model. We have expressed new and accurate analytical closed-form expressions for every type of channel capacity strategy. Moreover, the accuracy of our analytical derivation has been checked by Monte Carlo simulation results from MATLAB.
Performance analysis of FSO links employing a transmit and receive diversity-based operating system under Malaga turbulence channels with pointing errors Akinchan Das, Banibrata Bag, Chayanika Bose, Aniruddha Chandra Optics Continuum, 2022 This paper represents the performance analysis of a transmit and receive diversity-based free-space-optical (FSO) communication system employing Alamouti space-time-block-code (STBC) and the switch-and-examine combining (SEC) technique at the transmitter end receiver section. The generalized Málaga statistical distribution has been considered to realize the effect of atmospheric turbulence with pointing error. A new unified analytical framework has been employed to obtain the closed-form expressions for various performance measures like outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and average capacity of the said system. The results indicate that the performance gets better as the number of receiving antennas increases but only within the low signal to noise radio (SNR) region. Further, the optimum switching threshold scheme has been implemented for this proposed multi input multi output (MIMO) FSO system to achieve improved and optimum performances. However, applying the optimum switching threshold for SEC, the performance improvement is observed in the system’s outage and BER performance but not significantly in average capacity. Finally, the derived analytical expressions for each performance metric are validated through the corresponding Monte-Carlo simulations presented in various graphical plots.
ABER of an FSO Link in Gamma-Gamma Turbulence with SSK and SEC Akinchan Das, Banibrata Bag, Chayanika Bose, Aniruddha Chandra IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, 2021 In this paper, we have analyzed the average bit error rate (ABER) performance of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) free-space optical (FSO) communication link employing both transmitter and receiver diversity techniques. For the proposed MIMO FSO system, we have considered spatial shift keying (SSK), a specific case of spatial modulation (SM), as the diversity technique used at the transmitter end. On the other hand, switch and examine combining (SEC) is utilized as a spatial diversity technique at the receiver terminal of the system. A mathematical framework has been constructed to get the resultant closed-form expression of the performance metric. Specifically, a tight upper bound for the average BER of the given system is derived. It is noticed that under any receiver diversity order the amount of ABER gets improved after crosses the certain SNR level, and the impact of resultant metric also depends on the nature of atmospheric turbulence and the optimal switching threshold of the receiver diversity scheme. The outcome mathematical expression is presented in terms of Meijer’s G function and all numerical results are validated by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations.
Improving the performance of a DF relay-aided FSO system with an additional source-relay mmWave RF backup Banibrata Bag, Akinchan Das, Chayanika Bose, Aniruddha Chandra Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2020 Atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors are major hindrances behind the proliferation of free-space-optics (FSO) technology in next-generation fronthaul networks. This paper investigates the effect of a decode-and-forward relay in overcoming these impairments and how an additional source-to-relay millimeter-wave (mmWave) radio-frequency (RF) backup link improves the performance of the relay-aided FSO system further; i.e., we study the performance of a hybrid FSO/(FSO-FSO)/(RF-FSO) system. Generalized Málaga distribution is adopted to model atmospheric turbulence in FSO links, whereas the fading statistics of the mmWave RF link is modeled by Nakagami-mdistribution. The performance of the hybrid system is studied on the basis of analytical expressions derived for metrics such as outage probability, bit error rate, and ergodic capacity, and the results show the supremacy of the proposed hybrid FSO system. The improvement is, however, dependent on factors such as turbulence location and signal-to-noise ratio per bit, and not all performance metrics exhibit equal improvement.
Link Quality of a RF-assisted Relayed FSO System under Turbulence, Pointing Error and Fading Banibrata Bag, Akinchan Das, Chayanika Bose, Aniruddha Chandra 2020 International Conference on Computer Electrical and Communication Engineering Iccece 2020, 2020 Link quality of a free-space-optical (FSO) link depends on atmospheric turbulence severity and pointing error due to optical beam misalignment. To improve reliability of a FSO link, an intermediate relay node may be used. The overall link quality may be further improved by using an additional radio-frequency (RF) link assisting the relay, as described in this paper. For assessing the link quality, we have considered three metrics, namely, probability of outage, average bit error rate and ergodic capacity. Analytical expressions for these three metrics have been found which contains easily computable Meijer’s G functions and the numerical results are verified through Monte Carlo simulations. The turbulence in FSO links is modelled with Málaga distribution whereas the fading in the RF link is modelled with Rayleigh distribution. For the FSO relay node a decode-andforward (DF) relaying protocol is assumed.
Hybrid FSO/RF-FSO systems over generalized Málaga distributed channels with pointing errors Banibrata Bag, Akinchan Das, Chayanika Bose, Aniruddha Chandra European Signal Processing Conference, 2019 The combined effect of Málaga distributed atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors on the performance of a hybrid free-space optical (FSO)/ radio-frequency (RF)-FSO communication system is presented and analyzed in this paper. We considered three performance metrics, namely, outage probability, average bit error rate (BER) and average capacity. For each of the performance metrics, closed-form expressions are derived in terms of the Meijer’s G function, analytical results are validated by Monte Carlo simulations and numerical values of the metrics are plotted for different channel conditions. Compared to a single FSO link or a single RF-FSO link, the proposed adaptive hybrid system achieves reduced outage probability, reduced BER and enhanced channel capacity at the cost of extra hardware.
