Enhancing Oral Surgery Simulation: A Systematic Review of 3D-Printed Patient-Specific Models Compared to Traditional Animal Jaw Models for Presurgical Training Shahrzad Rahimizadeh Nahavandi, Leila Gholami, Morteza Ghojazadeh, Amirparham Pirhadi Rad, Rana Tarzemany Journal of Dental Education, 2026 Objectives3D‐printed simulation models are emerging as novel tools in various medical education fields. This study aims to investigate the evidence on the efficacy of 3D‐printed jaw models compared to traditional animal models for oral surgical skill training.MethodsA comprehensive literature search was conducted up to June 2024 in Ovid Medline, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, Epistemonikos, and ERIC databases. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, relevant studies were identified. Data were extracted independently by two reviewers. The Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument tool (MERSQI) was used for methodological quality assessment.ResultsA total of 1074 potentially relevant publications were initially identified. only three articles met the stringent inclusion criteria. These studies provided unique insights into the application, effectiveness, limitations, and potential of 3D‐printed versus animal models in dental oral surgery education, however, their methodological design received only a moderate score based on the MERSQI evaluation. In all three studies, the participants preferred 3D‐printed models over traditional cadaveric models in terms of anatomical accuracy, educational value, and surgical simulation. However, limitations were identified, particularly in replicating realistic soft tissue sensations.Conclusions3D‐printed models can provide a realistic and novel alternative tool to the animal jaw, enhancing the learning experience in oral surgical skill training of dental students. Despite the limitations of the available studies, integrating 3D printing technology into dental and oral surgery education shows promise for improving educational quality. Future well‐designed studies are needed to strengthen the existing evidence on this topic.
3D-Printed Models in Oral Surgery Simulation Training: A Scoping Review Shahrzad Rahimizadeh Nahavandi, Leila Gholami, Amir Parham Pirhadi Rad, Morteza Ghojazadeh, Kevin Aminzadeh, et al. Journal of Dental Education, 2026 Background Advancements in three‐dimensional (3D) printing have introduced innovative tools for medical and dental education. In dental surgery, 3D‐printed simulation models offer valuable presurgical training. This review explores the scope, study types, key findings, limitations, and future research needs to enhance their application in dental education. Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted across seven major health and education databases for studies published up to June 2025. A structured search strategy was developed using a combination of MeSH terms and keywords related to dental and oral surgical procedures, educational interventions, and 3D printing. Two reviewers independently screened and evaluated the retrieved articles. Studies were included if they investigated the use of 3D‐printed models as hands‐on simulation tools for intraoral surgery education. Only peer‐reviewed articles published in English were considered. Results A total of 3686 studies were identified, 34 of which met the inclusion criteria after screening. These studies, largely published within the past decade, evaluated the use of 3D‐printed models as training tools across five core areas of intraoral surgery, with the greatest focus on minor oral surgery (32%) and maxillofacial related procedures: orthognathic procedures (26%), followed by cleft palate surgery (15%), implant surgery (15%), and periodontal interventions (12%). Various printers and materials were employed, with an emphasis on model fabrication and evaluation through trainee feedback. The models were widely accepted by trainees, who reported improved technical skills, increased confidence, and reduced procedure time. However, challenges remain, particularly the need for advanced soft tissue‐replicating material to enhance anatomical realism. Conclusion 3D‐printed models are effective tools for pre‐operative planning and hands‐on training in oral surgery. Future research should focus on developing cost‐efficient printing technologies and advanced materials to better replicate hard and soft tissues in these models. Furthermore, well‐designed studies are needed to support changes to implementation into current curricula and enhance the delivery of surgical education.
Role of Vitamin C for the Treatment of COVID-19: An Umbrella Review Kavous Shahsavarinia, Shaghayegh Musazadeh, Morteza Ghojazadeh, Nooshin Milanchian, Maryam Soleimanpour, et al. Archives of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, 2026 Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious illness resulting from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The immune system overactivation triggered by this virus results in multiple organ damage. This infection has the potential to cause acute respiratory distress syndrome and may progress to respiratory failure, both of which can be life-threatening. Vitamin C is proposed as a possible treatment for immune system overactivation due to its antioxidant properties. Methods: This umbrella review seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin C in the management of COVID-19 infection. To identify pertinent literature, we conducted searches across Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Our analysis incorporated eight systematic reviews and meta-analyses that examined the impact of vitamin C on COVID-19 treatment outcomes. Results: Our findings revealed that the odds ratio (OR) of mortality in the vitamin C group is 0.55 (0.48-0.63). The duration of hospitalization did not differ between the groups and the need for mechanical ventilation in both groups. This umbrella review discusses the use of vitamin C in COVID-19 patients, highlighting its potential to reduce mortality rates. While the duration and dose of treatment vary There was no notable distinction observed between the vitamin C group and the control groups in hospital length, ICU stay, or mechanical ventilation days. Conclusion: The study suggests further research to determine its effectiveness in reducing mortality rates and suggests larger studies with a more specific protocol.
The Role of Etomidate for Rapid Sequence Intubation in Emergency Medicine: A Systematic Review Seyed Pouya Paknezhad, Kavous Shahsavarinia, Morteza Ghojazadeh, Fatemeh Jangjou Esfahlan, Maryam Soleimanpour, et al. Archives of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, 2025 Background: Etomidate, a short-acting hypnotic drug, plays a pivotal role in induction for intubation, particularly in emergency settings. Its favourable hemodynamic profile renders it a suitable choice for patients with hemodynamic instabilityMethods: In this systematic review, we aim to delineate its role in emergency ward settings. Through a systematic search across databases, we identified nine eligible studies for inclusion. We searched the databases of PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, and Medline (Ovid) from 2004 to 2023 for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and observational studies in which the study population was referred to the emergency department and received etomidate for Rapid sequence intubation (RSI).Results: These studies collectively underscored the safety and efficacy of etomidate in emergency patients, with its suppressive effects on the adrenal axis deemed clinically insignificant. Conclusion: The rapid onset of action and favourable hemodynamic profile position etomidate as a desirable agent for rapid sequence induction. However, further studies are warranted to strengthen recommendations in this regard.
Urolithiasis management: An umbrella review on the efficacy and safety of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) versus the ureteroscopic approach Anis Sani, Rasa Beheshti, Rozhin Khalichi, Maryam Taraghikhah, Elaheh Nourollahi, et al. Urologia Journal, 2025 This Umbrella Review aims to gather high-quality evidence on urolithiasis outcomes and complications, comparing extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), and retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS). We incorporated systematic reviews, some containing meta-analyses, into two separate reports, focusing on quantitative and qualitative results. Additionally, when data permitted, a secondary meta-analysis was conducted using final effect estimates from multiple meta-analyses. Stone-free rate (SFR) served as the primary outcome, with complications, retreatment, and hospital stay as secondary outcomes. Adhering to Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines, we initially screened 282 titles, narrowed down to 166 titles and abstracts, ultimately selecting 55 full-text articles for review. Of these, 22 met our inclusion criteria for the umbrella review. We evaluated study quality using JBI criteria, excluding five low-quality studies. Analysis showed ESWL had lower SFR compared to RIRS (RR: 0.577, 95% CI: 0.482–0.692) and URSL (RR: 0.570, 95% CI: 0.450–0.722); lower overall risk compared to ureteroscopy (RR: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.51–0.66). ESWL had fewer complications than RIRS ( p < 0.001), but lower SFR than ureteroscopy. However, the need for retreatment and auxiliary procedures in RIRS and URSL were lower than that in ESWL. In contrast, individuals undergoing ureteroscopy experienced a greater frequency of complications and longer duration of operation compared to those undergoing ESWL.
Effects of ostrich oil on knee osteoarthritis symptoms: A randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial Aliasghar Ebrahimi Chaharom, Faegheh Ebrahimi Chaharom, Bohloul Habibi Asl, Morteza Ghojazadeh Traditional and Kampo Medicine, 2025 PurposeOsteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease that progressively impairs joint function and mobility, especially in the elderly population. While traditional medicine has long cited the therapeutic properties of ostrich oil, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in treating OA is limited. This study aims to evaluate the effects of ostrich oil on knee OA symptoms in a controlled clinical setting.MethodsIn a double‐blind randomized clinical trial, we studied the efficacy of adjuvant therapy using ostrich oil to improve knee osteoarthritis symptoms. Ninety patients were randomly allocated to an intervention group and a control group. Both groups received 2 mL of ostrich oil or placebo twice daily per knee for two months. The effectiveness of adjuvant therapy was evaluated by measuring improvements in knee osteoarthritis symptoms. Statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05.ResultsThe intervention group showed significantly lower knee joint pain scores compared to the control group for both right (1.33 ± 0.59 vs 2.30 ± 0.92, p = 0.001; baseline: 2.83 ± 0.76 vs 2.85 ± 0.94) and left knees (1.31 ± 0.60 vs 2.22 ± 0.83, p = 0.001; baseline: 2.75 ± 0.84 vs 2.81 ± 0.71). Similarly, knee joint stiffness was significantly reduced in the intervention group compared to the control group for both right (1.56 ± 0.74 vs 1.79 ± 0.78, p = 0.035; baseline: 2.18 ± 0.88 vs 2.21 ± 0.91) and left knees (1.45 ± 0.53 vs 1.70 ± 0.69, p = 0.021; baseline: 2.05 ± 0.79 vs 2.12 ± 0.75). The 6‐m walking time improved in both groups, with no significant difference between groups after two months (10.95 ± 3.28 s vs 12.30 ± 3.13 s, p = 0.76; baseline: 16.10 ± 6.24 s vs 15.45 ± 2.28 s).ConclusionSymptoms of osteoarthritis, such as stiffness and pain in both knees, significantly reduced with ostrich oil treatment. However, in some criteria, no significant differences were observed between the treatment and control groups.
