The stress-innovation link: leadership and strategies of female entrepreneurs in diverse economies Adnan ul Haque, Fred Yamoah, Uchenna Nweke Strategy and Leadership, 2025 Purpose This study aims to explore the impact of occupational stress (OS) on the innovative entrepreneurial capabilities (IEC) and innovative work behavior (IWB) of female entrepreneurs operating in dissimilar economies. Canada, an advanced economy, and Pakistan, an emerging economy, provided contrasting economic backgrounds for the investigation. Design/methodology/approach Data collected from 106 female entrepreneurs (53 each from Canada and Pakistan) were quantitatively analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling. In addition, funnel approach (a secondary technique) was used to understand the in-depth trends and variation among contrasting economies. Findings The results from this study show that IEC and IWB are statistically significantly affected by OS (IEC = 0.001 < 0.05; p < α; IWB = 0.000 < 0.05; p < α). The causes of stress for Pakistani female entrepreneurs are commonly personal factors, while organizational factors affected Canadian female entrepreneurs frequently. Consequences of stress relating to behavioral and physical deterioration are evident among Pakistani female entrepreneurs, while emotional symptoms are evident among Canadian female entrepreneurs. Practical implications Female entrepreneurs need to understand the relationship between their economic background and the likely impact of OS on their IEC and IWB. Furthermore, appropriate measures suited to economic context are required in managing the effect of OS by female entrepreneurs. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on entrepreneurship and effective leadership by highlighting the occupational stressors that affect female entrepreneurs operating in contrasting economies and the impact of these stressors on their IEC and IWB.
Driving SME Growth Through Digital Leadership: Exploring Tenure and Transformation Dynamics Muhammad Imran, Rawiyah Abdul Hamid, Adnan ul Haque Administrative Sciences, 2025 The main objective of this study is to investigate the role of digital leadership in the sustainability of SMEs. Furthermore, this study examines the mediating role of digital transformation between digital leadership and SME sustainability and the moderating role of leadership tenure on the relationship between digital leadership and digital transformation. This research provides a unique perspective by exploring these connections within the context of developing countries by considering Malaysia as a case study. We employed the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique to analyze the 368 respondents’ data. The study results found a positive relationship between digital leadership and SMEs’ sustainability. Furthermore, it also revealed the positive and significant mediating role of digital transformation between digital leadership and SME sustainability. Examining mediating and moderating factors provided valuable insights for SMEs and policymakers alike. Research findings contribute to both theoretical understanding and practical applications.
The Impact of Varying Styles of Leadership on Team Dynamics and Project Success Harmandeep Kaur, Adnan ul Haque, Pavlos Gkasis Forum Scientiae Oeconomia, 2024 The present study examines the impact that distinct styles of leadership have on team dynamics and project success. By combining purposive, convenience, and networking sampling techniques to avoid overreliance on one single sampling technique, we used partial least squares structural equation modelling on a sample of 188 responses obtained from a semi-structured matrix-based questionnaire. Our findings revealed that autocratic leadership has no significant impact on team dynamics or project success. All other styles considered (i.e. servant leadership, agile leadership, ethical leadership, and laissez-faire leadership) have a statistically significant impact on team dynamics and project success. Furthermore, servant leadership and agile leadership have a strong positive correlation with team dynamics and project success, whereas ethical leadership exhibits a moderate positive linkage with team dynamics and project success. Laissez-faire leadership and autocratic leadership have weak positive correlations with team dynamics and project success. Lastly, team dynamics impact project outcomes in a statistically significant manner. Our analysis concludes that the most effective leadership style among all the above is servant leadership, which has a statistically significant positive impact on team dynamics and project success.
Entrepreneurial Stress and Mental Well-being: Pre-and Post-COVID-19 Compara?ve Analysis of SMEs in Canada Irfan ul Haq, Adnan ul Haque, Nurul Aisyah Awanis A Rahim Forum Scientiae Oeconomia, 2024 There is no conclusive evidence to compare pre- and post-COVID-19 data to measure the performance of SMEs through the lens of mental well-being. The goal of this paper is to contribute to the existing knowledge through a comparative lens, especially considering entrepreneurial stress. This research examined the entrepreneurial stress and mental well-being of entrepreneurs in Canadian SMEs, specifically pre- and post-COVID-19. The PRISMA framework, based on the philosophy of interpretivism, was applied and 37 articles were taken into consideration for this research. The findings confirm that there is a significant increase in the entrepreneurial stress affecting the mental well-being and overall performance of Canadian SMEs, especially during and after COVID-19. Furthermore, this research confirmed that everyone’s reaction to and precautions taken against entrepreneurial stress vary. Interestingly, distinct stressors such as finances, family, and work–life imbalance have evidently increased. However, the magnitude of these stressors varies for individuals. Similarly, the consequences also differ; however, emotional symptoms, followed by physical and behavioural symptoms, have noticeably been exhibited by entrepreneurs both pre- and post-COVID, while performance among SMEs has dwindled, which has brought about a higher number of entrepreneurship closures. This manuscript contributes to the existing literature from multiple facets, such as (i) through the comparative lens, (ii) enriching the literature from an advanced economy, (iii) expanding upon the theory of entrepreneurial stress, and (iv) shedding light on the importance of entrepreneurs’ mental well-being. The manuscript also provides practical implications to entrepreneurs to deal with distinct types of stressors.
Knowledge hiding and occupational stress affecting employees’ performance: comparative analysis from emerging and advanced economies Adnan Ul Haque Knowledge Management Research and Practice, 2024 This study examined the impact of knowledge hiding (KH) and occupational stress (OS) on the employees’ performance (EP) within the logistics businesses in the contrasting economies: Canada, United Kingdom, India, and Pakistan. The matrix-based questionnaire circulated and total 224 valid responses (56 from each country) out of 408 sample gathered through networking, disproportionate quota, and purposive sampling technique. For the data analysis, PLS-SEM was employed. The results showed that knowledge hiding and occupational stress affect the performance of the employees negatively in all considered distinctive economies. Interestingly, the usage of funnel approach revealed that higher knowledge hiding (KH) is evident in Canada and the UK (developed economies) as compared to Pakistan and India (emerging economies). The comparison revealed that the knowledge hiding is higher than the occupational stress in affecting the employees’ performance. Furthermore, knowledge hiding creates unfriendly environment with higher depression and anxiety, that are contributing factors towards lower performance at all levels of the organisation.
The Impact of Tutor Quality on E-Learning Acceptance: A Mediating Effect of E-Assessment in Public Universities of Malaysia Muhammad Imran, Adnan ul Haque, Eugene Kozlovski Iscset 2024 13th International Symposium on Computer Science and Educational Technology, 2024 The present study seeks to examine the extent to which tutor quality affects the acceptance level of students toward e-learning at public universities in Malaysia, while also considering the mediating role of e-assessment. The structured questionnaires were adopted to collect 450 responses from students in public universities. The outcomes demonstrate a significant and positive relationship between tutor quality and students' e-learning adoption rate. Additionally, the relationship between tutor quality and acceptance level of students toward e-learning is significantly mediated by e-assessment. The key gap that the present study has filled is the inclusion of the above-stated mediating variable. Several important recommendations and insights are provided to enhance the acceptance and effectiveness of e-learning in this specific educational environment.
