Adolescent Adjustment: Investigating the Predictive Role of Family Communication Patterns Alireza Zareian Jahromi, M. Mahmoudian, S. Samani International Journal of School Health, 2020 Background: Adjustment is considered as one of the most important signs of mental health and well-being; it refers to any kind of healthy or unhealthy, conscious or unconscious attempt to prevent or weaken the stressors and ability to tolerate hard situations. One of the variables probably involved in adolescent adjustment is the family communication patterns which include two important dimensions: conversation pattern and conformity pattern. The present study aimed to explain the relationship between the family communication patterns and adolescent adjustment and investigate the predictive role of family communication patterns. Methods: This study is correlational research and the study population consisted of all male and female students of the high schools in Shiraz, Iran, during the academic year of 2019-2020. Sample size was determined by Cochran formula with a significance level of 0.05. Through multistage sampling method, six schools from each of the four districts were selected; three classes were then chosen from each high school. Finally, five to six random students were selected from each class to answer the questionnaires. The sample consisted of 380 high school students (210 girls and 170 boys). We used the family communication patterns questionnaire; it is a self-report scale examining the agreement or disagreement level of the respondents based on a five-point Likert scale regarding 26 items on family communication. Multidimensional adjustment scale was further applied. This scale includes 15 items and five components, namely personal, social, educational, occupational, and family. The extracted data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics including Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression statistics in SPSS version 21.Results: Conformity communication pattern had a significant negative relationship with adjustment (Beta=-0.48, P=0.001); meanwhile, there was a significant positive relationship between conversation pattern and adjustment (Beta=0.36, P=0.001), both predicting 55% of the variance in adolescents adjustment. Conclusion: The dimensions of family communication patterns predicted adolescent adjustment and conversation communication pattern had positive and conformity communication pattern had negative relationship with adolescent adjustment.
The Effect of Ventilation by Window Opening on Stress, Anxiety, and Depression of Female High School Students Najmeh Najafi, Khosro Movahed, Zahra Barzegar, Siamak Samani International Journal of School Health, 2019 Background: The mental and physical comfort of students in the classroom is very important because it affects students’ learning. The structure of negative emotional states, including stress, anxiety, and depression is influenced by the building environment and its physical features. Objectives: The present study aimed to survey the relationship between ventilation by window opening and female student’s stress, anxiety, and depression in high school classrooms. Methods: The current study was conducted as a quasi-experimental method, using pre-test and post-test with the control group. Statistical population of this study was female students studying at Shiraz high schools during 2016 - 2017. A total of 384 students were selected randomly using Cochran’s formula for participation in the study. The students in 14 classrooms were divided into two groups of intervention and control. The pre-test was used for assessing stress, anxiety, and depression in DASS-21 questionnaires. The intervention group was then allowed to improve the air quality for 6 weeks by opening the window in the classroom. However, this discretion was not given to students in the control group. After 6 weeks of post-test, DASS 21 questionnaire was used. Results: The mean stress score in the intervention group was 20.36 ± 4.326 at pre-test and 19.91 ± 5.162 at post-test and in the control group was 20.28 ± 5.348 at pre-test and 19.91 ± 5.162 at post-test. The mean anxiety score in the intervention group was 20.15 ± 4.705 at pre-test and 18.55 ± 4.673 at post-test and in the control group was 19.12 ± 5.272 at pre-test and 18.92 ± 5.0 at post-test. Also, the mean depression score in the intervention group was 18.29 ± 4.878 at pre-test and 18.53 ± 4.750 at post-test and in the control group was 17.83 ± 5.501 at pre-test and 17.28 ± 5.375 at post-test. Ventilation by window opening could significantly decrease the level of stress (P < 0.001) and anxiety (P < 0.001) but no significant difference was observed in depression (P = 0.067). Conclusions: Ventilation by window opening in the classroom could reduce the stress and anxiety of female high school students in eight weeks, but did not affect the level of depression.
Family Process and Content Model: A contextual model for family studies Siamak Samania Procedia Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2011 According to Family Process and Content Model (FPC Model), Family is a Contextual and Dynamic Phenomena (Samani, 2008a). Samani (2005) designed FPC Model based on clinical observation, family interview and experimental data. Family process, family content and family social context are the main dimensions of in FPC Model. Family process refers to verity of family functions to help the family as a system to adjust with new situations and needs. Family content refers to family possession and family social context defines situational characters and social values and beliefs those hold a family. According to Samani, 2010, Samani, 2008b three types of family can be defined based on the two first dimensions (Family process and Family content): healthy or efficient family, unhealthy or inefficient family and, Problematic family. The FPC Model based on three different family assessment zoom (Holistic zoom, Multidimensional zoom, and Pathological zoom) provides a useful framework for family description and family perception.

These factors have a significant positive correlation with marital satisfaction, and a significant negative correlation with marital conflicts
Psychometric properties of the academic hope scale: Persian form Nadereh Sohrabi Shegefti, Siamak Samani Procedia Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2011 The aim of this study was to check the psychometric Properties of the Academic Hope Scale for Iranian sample. The sample consisted of 283 high school student in Shiraz city in south of Islamic Republic of Iran. Three scale were used for data gathering in this research: The Academic Hope Scale, The Hope Scale, and The Academic Support Scale. Principal component factor analysis on the Academic Hope Scale (Persian Form) indicated a 2-factors solution: Agency and Pathway. The results revealed a good internal consistency for these two factors. The mean correlations among factors and between factors and the total score of the scale were .18 and .42, respectively. Coefficients alpha indicated good reliability and internal consistency for the scale.

Spouse selection: Important criteria and age preferences of an Iranian sample Siamak Samani, Bruce A. Ryan Psychological Reports, 2008 Importance of different criteria and age preference in spouse selection for single and married young Iranian adults was examined. The sample included 104 married (49 male. 55 female) and 112 single (51 male. 61 female) students. A 26- item scale developed for this study included 4 items related to demographic factors. 3 items on preferences for the ideal age of marriage, and 19 Likert-type items asking about criteria important for spouse selection. Analysis indicated that, in Iran, commitment, chastity, refinement, and health are four important criteria for spouse selection among male and female and single and married persons. Also, experience of marriage for married males may increase maturity, social prestige, family background, having a job, and age as criteria for choosing a spouse. On the other hand, marriage experience for females may decrease the importance of social skills, housekeeping, and autonomy for selecting a spouse.
