  • Review: recent developments in 2D MXene-filled bioinspired composites for biomedical applications
Yuksel Akinay, Mehmet Topuz, Umit Gunes, Muhammet Enver Gokdemir, Tayfun Cetin
    Journal of Materials Science, 2025
Two-dimensional carbide- and nitride-based MXene materials have become some of the most studied materials in interdisciplinary fields due to their superior properties. This review comprehensively discusses recent advances in MXene materials such as bioinspired coating films, scaffolds, and electrochemical activities for use in biomedical fields. MXene consists of multilayer 2D nitride, carbide, or carbonitride flakes with excellent electrical conductivity, large surface area, and good mechanical properties. Bibliometric studies have revealed a sharp increase in the number of publications and citations, having reached 15,831 records as of February 2025. Notably, the number of citations surged from under 20 in 2012 to over 222,000 in 2024. Due to being two-dimensional materials with superior physicochemical and biological properties, MXenes are also being increasingly used in biomedical and engineering applications. They have been reported to be ideal for such biomedical applications as corrosion-resistant biofilms, biocompatibility, low toxicity, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. In addition, MXene-based scaffolds have emerged as a promising material for bone tissue engineering due to their extraordinary mechanical durability, biocompatibility, and adjustable surface properties. By aiding tissue regeneration and preventing infections, MXene scaffolds have also been found to exhibit enhanced drug delivery and antibacterial properties. Recent advances in materials science have focused on creating bioinspired structures with multifunctionality. Taking into account MXenes’ multilayered structures and functional surfaces, unique physicochemical properties have been designed by learning from nature to produce bioinspired materials. This article comprehensively reviews biomedical applications of such 2D MXene materials as bioinspired coating films, scaffolds as biosensors, drug delivery, cancer treatments, and tissue regeneration. • Constructal law in energy transport and utilization
    Umit Gunes
International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer, 2024
Economies around the world are greatly affected by global transport. The movement of freight between starting and end points can occur in numerous different ways that each have their own unique positive and negative aspects. While studies on transportation need to involve optimization, this alone is insufficient due to how any specific optimization only applies to an optimal value for a specific time period. Transportation models have dynamic structures that necessitate having decision makers also consider how time factors into their policies. Constructal law is a method that can allow models for international transportation to be simplified by applying the results of Constructal law regarding the configuration of river deltas to the question of how best to set up a few large and many small transport modes for a given route, which in air transport can be referred to as the hub and spokes model. This article investigates a transport model based on having a small number of large and many small modes of transport and uses yearly data.

  • Thermal Energy Storage in Phase Change Materials—A Bibliometric Approach
    S. Senthilraja, Umit Gunes, Mohamed M. Awad
Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Management and Storage Fundamentals and Applications, 2024
Most nations rely on phase change materials (PCMs) to satisfy their energy needs because of their unique ability to retain and liberate energy via a change in phase. In this chapter, a bibliometric analysis is conducted to review the articles published on thermal energy storage using different PCMs. In this chapter, 8212 relevant articles published from 1975 to 2022 were collected from the Scopus database, and the bibliometric analysis was carried out using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny tools. The results of this study can reduce many issues in renewable energy systems. This chapter also suggests suitable keywords for young scholars to retrieve and continue their study in this energy storage field. This result helps the young researchers understand PCMs and their applications in energy storage.
  • Locomotion rhythm makes power and speed
    A. Bejan, U. Gunes, H. Almahmoud
    Scientific Reports, 2023
This article addresses two questions, why certain animals (frogs, breaststroke swimmers, hovering fliers, jellyfish) push rapidly against the surrounding fluid and then reach forward slowly, and whether this rhythm of propulsion is a manifestation of the universal phenomenon of design evolution in nature. Emphasis is on the distribution of time periods of locomotion in which, during the driving phase of cyclic movement (the motive stroke, phases 1 and 2, in alternating sequence with the dissipative stroke, phase 3), the work is generated (phase 1) and dissipated (phase 2). The relative lengths of the characteristic times t1 and t2 of the phases 1 and 2, are predicted. The relative duration of the proposed three phases of a cycle is the ‘rhythm’. The analysis is based on a model of how the effective cross-sections of the stroking body parts impact the surrounding medium, water, or air, and the total power required to account for the kinetic energy losses during phases 2 and 3, which are due to drag forces posed by the surrounding medium. The body configuration (limbs' cross-sections) determines the limbs' velocities that maximize mean power, and the times t1 and t2 within the motive stroke. Emphasis is placed on the freedom to change the evolving design. Freedom is represented in two ways: the number of degrees of freedom in changing the dimensions of the model and its deformation in time, and the effect that evolutionary changes have on the access that the body has to its available space. Freedom to change the locomotion design leads to greater power and speed.
