Sterically Controlled Interfacial Charge-Transfer Mechanisms in Unsymmetrical Squaraine Dyes for Suppressed Aggregation and Enhanced Performance in High-Efficiency Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Abdullah N. Almulaiky, Ali Arabie Chemistryopen, 2026 Steric regulation at the dye/semiconductor interface critically governs charge recombination and interfacial energetics in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) but remains poorly defined for unsymmetrical squaraine sensitizers. Here, two π‐extended unsymmetrical squaraine dyes (AQ1 and AQ2) are designed to clarify how alkyl‐chain‐induced steric modulation influences aggregation, surface packing, and intramolecular charge‐transfer (ICT) dynamics. Both dyes show strong visible–near‐infrared absorption and suitable the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO–LUMO) alignment for electron injection into TiO 2 . In AQ2, branched alkyl substituents provide enhanced steric shielding at the TiO 2 interface, suppressing aggregation, modifying interfacial dipoles, and increasing R rec . Importantly, efficiency gains arise mainly from steric control of interfacial energetics and recombination kinetics rather than aggregation suppression alone. Consequently, AQ2‐based DSSCs deliver 7.41% power conversion efficiency with higher R rec = 11.64 Ω and longer electron lifetime ( τ = 8.58 ms) than AQ1, despite lower dye loading. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and density functional theory (DFT) corroborate suppressed back‐electron transfer.
Synergistic and Magnetically Recoverable NiFe2O4–MWCNT–CA Nanocomposites for Efficient UV-Driven Photodegradation of Organic Pollutants Assem Basurrah, Ibrahim O. Althobaiti, Yaaser Q. Almulaiky Catalysts, 2026 A synergistic and magnetically recoverable NiFe2O4–MWCNT–CA nanocomposite was developed for efficient UV-driven photodegradation of hazardous organic pollutants. Biogenic NiFe2O4 nanoparticles synthesized using Costus speciosus extract exhibited a crystallite size of 32.5 nm, which increased to 83.6 nm upon incorporation into the MWCNT–cellulose acetate matrix. XRD confirmed the preservation of the cubic spinel structure, while VSM analysis showed maintained ferrimagnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization of 9.64 emu/g, enabling rapid magnetic separation. Although BET analysis revealed a reduction in surface area from 112.46 to 30.99 m2/g due to hybridization, the conductive MWCNT network significantly enhanced charge separation and interfacial electron transport. The composite displayed a widened optical bandgap of 5.3 eV, necessitating UV excitation for photocatalytic activity. Under UV irradiation, it achieved rapid degradation of methylene blue (97%) and Congo red (91%) at 20 mg/L, with corresponding rate constants of 0.119 and 0.076 min−1. Scavenger experiments confirmed hydroxyl radicals (•OH) as the dominant reactive species, followed by photogenerated holes (h+). These results demonstrate a robust and synergistically engineered photocatalyst with high efficiency in removing organic pollutants under UV illumination.
Green Synthesis of Silver-Magnetite Co-Decorated Acrylic Fabrics Using Brachychiton populneus Extract for Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Applications Rasha A. Zailaee, Reda M. El-Shishtawy, Saleh M. Al-Maaqar, Nahed S. E. Ahmed, Yaaser Q. Almulaiky Textiles Switzerland, 2026 This manuscript reports a green approach for producing multifunctional acrylic fabrics co-decorated with Fe3O4 and Ag nanoparticles using Brachychiton populneus extract. Acrylic fabric was first amidoxime-functionalized to enable strong anchoring of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, followed by in situ deposition of AgNPs, during which the extract’s phytochemicals acted as reducing and stabilizing agents. FTIR, SEM/EDX, and VSM analyses confirmed successful surface modification and nanoparticle incorporation. The sequential treatments produced measurable add-on values (16.7% after amidoximation, followed by 10.9% and 8.5% after Fe3O4 and AgNP deposition, respectively). The Ag/Fe3O4-coated fabrics exhibited enhanced hydrophobicity and strong antimicrobial activity, with inhibition zones up to 14 mm against bacteria (including MRSA) and 26.9 mm against fungi at the highest Ag loading. Antioxidant activity was also markedly improved, showing up to a 78-fold increase in reducing power. Overall, this sustainable plant-mediated route provides an effective strategy for developing antimicrobial and antioxidant acrylic textiles for technical and protective applications.
