    E3s Web of Conferences, 2025
Smart tourism technologies are increasingly embedded in nature- based destinations, yet their effects across the tourist journey remain underexplored. The study analyzes how smart technology used before, during, and after a visit influences tourist satisfaction in a mangrove ecotourism context. A survey of 408 visitors was conducted, and the data was examined through descriptive statistics and multiple regression. Findings reveal that on-site technology use has the strongest positive effect on satisfaction (β = 0.543, p < 0.001), while post-visit sharing on social media also contributes significantly (β = 0.139, p < 0.001). Pre-visit technology engagement shows no significant impact (β = 0.031, p = 0.538). The overall satisfaction level was high (M = 4.269, SD = 0.804). The results emphasize the importance of immersive on-site experiences supported by meaningful post-visit engagement. This research advances ecotourism and smart tourism studies by demonstrating the temporal role of technology in shaping satisfaction and provides managerial guidance for improving visitor experiences. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
  • Modelling AI-Driven smart tourism experiences: A structural analysis of acceptance, trust, and sustainable engagement

    E3s Web of Conferences, 2025
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes integral to tourism, understanding how it shapes smart travel experiences is essential. This study develops and tests a structural model linking six constructs: AI acceptance and usage, system quality, trust, infrastructure readiness, sustainability, and overall experience. Grounded in TAM, UTAUT, and the IS Success Model, it highlights trust, ethics, and sustainability as central to AI-driven tourism. Data from 538 travellers across Southeast Asia were analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), with purposive sampling used to ensure relevance of AI experience. Results show that infrastructure readiness and system quality strongly influence trust and user satisfaction, while sustainability mediates the relationship between AI use and positive travel experiences. This research contributes a multidimensional framework connecting technology adoption with responsible tourism outcomes. The findings offer practical implications for policymakers and tourism providers to develop ethical, inclusive, and infrastructure-ready AI systems that enhance user trust and sustainable travel behaviour.
  • AI-driven competitive advantage model in tourism: integrating model of HOTE model and performances model (HOTE-P adoption model)
Wahyu Rafdinal, Tomy Andrianto, Gundur Leo, Mohammad Rizal Gaffar, Fajar Kusnadi Kusumah Putra
Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology, 2025
Purpose This study aims to discover the competitive advantage of tourist destinations that adopted artificial intelligence (AI) by integrating the human–organisation–technology–environment (HOTE) model and performance model. Design/methodology/approach The data were collected via a survey of 136 tourist destination managers who used AI and analysed using the structural equation modelling-partial least squares and importance performance map analysis. Findings This study’s findings demonstrate that human, organisational, technological and environmental factors are crucial determinants in AI adoption, influencing managerial performance, destination performance and social performance. These three performance aspects confirmed their influence on competitive advantage. Practical implications Practically, this study encourages the tourism industry to increase the adoption of AI in tourism destination management, thereby improving performance and competitive advantage. Through this study, destination marketing managers, governments and others concerned with the tourism industry’s future development can create effective ways to increase the adoption of AI in this industry. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to empirically use the HOTE model and performance model in analysing the competitive advantage of tourist destinations.
  • ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOUR INTENTION IN CONSUMING PLANT-BASED FOOD: EVIDENCE FROM YOUNG TOURISTS IN INDONESIA
Christina KOH, Dwi SUHARTANTO, Anthony BRIEN, Tomy ANDRIANTO, Eryd SAPUTRA, et al.
    Tourism and Hospitality Management, 2024
Purpose – This research aims to observe the attitudes and behavioural intentions of young tourists in relation to their experiences of consuming PBF, including value consumption, concern for the environment and perceived cost as influencing factors. Methodology/Design/Approach – Considering that it is almost impossible to determine the sample frame for young tourists in Indonesia, this research used a non-probability sample to collect the sample. The study focused on young tourists aged 18 to 35 years old who have experience of consuming PBF while travelling. A self-administered online questionnaire was provided to tourists visiting a destination from July to September 2022, resulting in 267 usable responses. Findings – Tourists’ attitude towards PBF leads to their intention to buy again during or after their visit and to offer profitable e-WOM. In addition, perceived cost moderates the relationship between attitude and e-WOM; however, it does not provide evidence for the moderating role between attitude and repurchase intention. Originality of the research – This study highlights the value of consumption, concern for the environment and perceived costs as factors influencing tourists’ attitudes and behavioural intentions towards public transport.

This paper aims to examine the roles of Virtual Reality (VR) system quality and VR content quality in affecting satisfaction and loyalty toward VR among Muslim tourists. The data were gathered from 282 Muslim tourists from various countries who visit tourist destinations in non-organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) countries via VR. The data were collected using Qualtrics Software and the M-Turk Survey application by generating self-administered questionnaires. Partial Least Square Modeling software was used to test the hypotheses. The results indicate that only the quality of VR content gives a direct impact on tourist loyalty. However, tourist satisfaction is influenced by the quality of both VR system and content. This study highlights the key role of VR system quality to enable delivering high content quality, providing satisfaction, and generating loyalty among Muslim tourists. It also deepens our knowledge of the role of the Muslim tourist experience in VR tourism and provides practitioners with insights to develop strategies in order to build and maintain Muslim tourist loyalty through VR.
