Taking advantage of the filmogenic properties of liquid crystal materials, bilayer heterojunction devices are built by combining them with a molecular semiconductor. Herein, the construction of a novel type of heterojunction sensor by employing bent‐core liquid crystals (A1, A2, B1 and C‐1C3) as a sublayer with lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc2) as a common top layer is achieved. Thanks to the modified drop casting method employed to deposit the sublayers, the resulting heterojunction devices exhibit a smooth surface, the morphology of the sublayer determining that of the top layer. All prepared devices are sensitive to ammonia, with a limit of detection below 10 ppm for C1, C2, and C3‐based heterojunctions, even down to 2 ppm for C2‐based devices, which is more than satisfactory for controlling ammonia levels in industrial working environments. Moreover, the C3‐based device shows the shortest response time (t90 = 30 s), which is suitable not only for air quality monitoring but also for applications like security alarm systems. All presented sensors operate at ambient temperature (20 °C) and humidity (45%).
Bias Induced Ambipolar Transport in Organic Heterojunction Sensors

Interface engineering in organic heterostructures is an important approach to tuning the characteristics of organic electronic devices and improving their performances in applications, such as gas sensing. Herein, organic heterostructures containing, a polyporphine (pZnP‐1), perfluorinated copper phthalocyanine (Cu(F16Pc)), and lutetium bis‐phthalocyanine (LuPc2) are synthesized by a combination of electrochemical and PVD methods for investigation of charge transport and ammonia (NH3) sensing application. pZnP‐1 is synthesized by controlled oxidative electropolymerization and reveals a rough surface, which influences the electrical nature of its interface with the phthalocyanine. The electrical properties of the heterojunction devices reveal distinct interfacial and bulk charge transport properties, which are modulated by the thickness of pZnP‐1 and the external electric field. Indeed, the heterojunction device containing a thin film of pZnP‐1 displays n‐type behavior at low bias and p‐type nature at higher bias; i.e., an ambipolar behavior, in which ambipolarity is triggered by the external electric field. On the other hand, the heterojunction device having a thick film of pZnP‐1 exhibits p‐type behavior at all the studied biases. Investigation of NH3 sensing properties of the heterojunction devices highlights the advantages of introducing pZnP‐1 in the heterostructures, which enhances the sensitivity, stability, repeatability, and humidity tolerance of the sensors.

Recent advances in the clinical extracellular vesicles (EVs) field highlight their potential as biomarkers for diverse diseases and therapeutic applications. This study provides an in-depth characterization of 10k EVs from human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) exposed to benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon found in food and smoke. Given EVs’ complexity, with numerous surface and cargo proteins, phenotyping remains challenging. Here, we introduce a multiplex biosensor, in µarray format, for profiling EVs from distinct cellular conditions, employing a multimodal approach that combines surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) and in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) to decipher EVs’ biochemical and biophysical properties. SPRi experiments showed notable EV capture differences on ligands such as Anti-CD36, Anti-CD81, and Anti-ApoA between treated and control conditions, likely due to B[a]P exposure. A complementary AFM study and statistical analyses revealed size differences between EVs from treated and control samples, with ligands like Annexin-V, Anti-CD36, and Anti-VEGFR1 emerging as ligands specific to potential cytotoxicity biomarkers. Our findings suggest that B[a]P exposure may increase EV size and alter marker expression, indicating phenotypic shifts in EVs under cytotoxic stress. The original combination of SPRi and AFM reveals valuable data on the phenotypical and morphological heterogeneities of EV subsets linked to cytotoxic stresses and highlights the potential of EVs as specific toxicological markers.
