Effects of phenolic microballoon/epoxy fills on flexural and block-shear performance of thin aramid honeycomb-core CFRP sandwich panels Ardy Lololau, Herry Purnomo, Arif Nur Hakim, Muhamad H. Setianto, Mahfud Ibadi, Arif Rachman Hakim, Muhammad Awwaluddin Materials Today Communications, 2026 This study investigates the mechanical performance of thin CFRP/aramid honeycomb sandwich panels (total thickness 3–6 mm) filled with phenolic microballoon/epoxy syntactic foam, with a specific focus on the effect of manufacturing route. Three configurations were fabricated and characterized: unfilled baseline, in-situ co-cured fill, and pre-filled with secondary bonding. Three-point flexural and punch block-shear tests were conducted, with results normalized by specimen mass to enable weight-efficiency comparisons. In-situ co-curing yielded superior performance, achieving a flexural strength of 222.43 MPa and block-shear strength of 32.03 MPa — representing 5.8-fold and 1.7-fold improvements over the unfilled baseline, respectively. Thickness-normalized stiffness analysis confirmed a genuine 27% intrinsic rigidity gain, independent of geometric thickness effects. Fractography revealed a transition from core-dominated buckling to tensile face-sheet fracture in in-situ co-cured filled panel, indicating full sandwich beam engagement. Pre-filled panel underperformed the unfilled baseline in block-shear, attributed to approximately 26.7% excess porosity arising from unconstrained room-temperature cure and poor secondary bond quality. These findings establish in-situ co-curing as the critical processing parameter for thin syntactic foam-cored sandwich panels in lightweight aerospace structural applications.
Corrosion Characteristics of Ferritic Stainless Steel: Effects of Heating Holding Time and Bending Angle Sri Hastuty, Rizky Bagus Eka Sugiharto, Diva Dwira Permana, Muhammad Awwaluddin, Farah Farhana Zainal Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2026 This study investigates the influence of chloride ion concentration and thermal-mechanical treatments on intergranular corrosion (IGC) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in austenitic stainless steel 201. Heat treatment involved annealing at 1000°C for 60 minutes, followed by sensitization at 700°C with varied holding times (90, 120, and 150 minutes). Mechanical deformation was introduced through bending tests at 0°, 90°, and 180° angles. Electrochemical corrosion behavior was analyzed using open-circuit potential (OCP) and Tafel polarization curves in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, while microstructural changes were characterized using optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results showed that both increased holding time and bending angle led to greater chromium-carbide precipitation along grain boundaries, thereby intensifying IGC and promoting deeper, longer SCC cracks. The corrosion potential (Ecorr) became more negative, and corrosion current density (Icorr) increased, confirming a rise in corrosion rate. This comprehensive approach provides insights into the mechanisms of material degradation in chloride-rich environments and guides industrial strategies to mitigate corrosion in piping systems.
Simulation and Experimental Validation of Stress Analysis for Train Coupler Makmuri Nuramin, Anwar, Rohadi S. B. Utomo, Djoko W. Karmiadji, Budi Haryanto, Yudi Irawadi, Budi Prasetiyo, Akhmad Sarif, Arga A. Nugroho, Muchamad Gozali, Indra H. Mulyowardono, Muhammad Awwaluddin, Hedi Purnomo Tikrit Journal of Engineering Sciences, 2025 This study investigates the stress distribution in a sand-cast steel train coupler by comparing experimental results with FEM simulation. Strain gauges were attached to the coupler body areas to measure stresses under varying loads ranging from 500 kN to 1900 kN. The results indicated that the experimental and simulation stress values exhibited a linear relationship with increasing load, reaching a maximum of 206 MPa at 1900 kN. This stress value was approximately 30% of the material's yield strength. However, the experimental stress values tended to be slightly higher than the simulated results, with an average difference of less than 10%. This deviation is attributed to casting defects, geometric irregularities, and material-property differences that are difficult to capture in simulations. The specimen's chemical composition aligns with the Association of American Railroads (AAR) M201 Grade E Steel Casting standards, ensuring the material meets industry requirements. The findings suggest that optimizing the post-casting machining process could improve accuracy in future FEM analyses.

Stress Corrosion Cracking of Brass in Chloride Solution Sri Hastuty, Yeshaya Armani Ramadhan, Fatwa Khoirrun Nadhor, Muhammad Awwaluddin, Farid Triawan, Faisal Mahmuddin Solid State Phenomena, 2024 In this investigation, the resistance of brass material to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in a chloride solution was assessed through adjustments in temperature (25°C, 35°C, and 45°C) and bending angles of the brass material (1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt%, and 3.5 wt%). The chosen solution closely resembles saltwater, making it suitable for testing, especially considering the widespread use of brass materials in various industrial sectors, particularly shipping. Stress corrosion cracking tends to impact brass materials under heavy loading. The primary objective of this study is to characterize the corrosion rate of brass materials. The method involved a bending test with angle variations of 180°, 90°, and 0°. Corrosion assessment utilized the Open Circuit Potential method, Anodic Polarization Tafel, and a digital microscope for the material's microstructure properties. According to the findings, brass material exhibits the lowest corrosion rate (10 x 10-6 mmpy) at a temperature of 25°C distilled water and an angle variation of 0°. Conversely, the corrosion rate increases with variations in bending angle, temperature, and the concentration of NaCl solution, as evidenced by the corrosion rate of 28.035 x 10-5 mmpy with an angle variation of 180°, to a corrosive solution of NaCl 3.5 wt% at a temperature of 45°C.
Effect of Yttrium on corrosion resistance of Zr-based alloys in Ringer’s lactate solution for biomaterial applications Muhammad Awwaluddin, Sri Hastuty, Djoko Hadi Prajitno, Makmuri, Budi Prasetiyo, Yudi Irawadi, Jekki Hendrawan, Harry Purnama, Eko Agus Nugroho Aims Materials Science, 2024
<p>In this study, several types of zirconium-based alloys supplemented with 2, 3, and 4, in wt.% of yttrium for corrosion resistance enhancement were investigated. The specimens were prepared by a single arc welding furnace in an argon-controlled atmosphere. By optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical tests, the effect of different portions of yttrium on the surface morphology, phase structure, and corrosion resistance in the Zr alloys were analyzed. As of result of arc welding, the specimens were obtained and examined by optical microscope and then homogenous structures were observed. These structures are matrix (Zr-rich) and oxides. Furthermore, as of the characterization results by X-ray diffraction, the main compound of the alloys was Zr6Mo6AlTi, while others were AlZr3, MoO2, ZrO2, and Y2O3 oxides. Yttrium addition in the alloys prior to the corrosion test led to thickened grain boundaries but reduced grain size. The Y2O3 itself remained at the grain boundaries as clusters. The corrosion test was performed in Ringer's lactate solution by using anodic polarization. The effect of yttrium addition into Zr-based alloys was found to be beneficial by shifting the corrosion potential toward a positive value. Zr-6Mo-6Al-Ti-4Y had a higher open corrosion potential value than the other two alloys. The difference was approximately 200 mV. However, the passive region of Zr-6Mo-6Al-Ti-4Y was the shortest and broke down at an earlier stage. The formation of these kinds of oxides was the reason for the increase in corrosion potential of Zr-based alloys with 4% Y added.</p>
Corrosion Behavior of Hastelloy C-276 in Hydrochloric and Sulfuric Acid Sri Hastuty, Anang Widiatmoko, Toto Sudiro, Muhammad Awwaluddin, Poppy Puspitasari Key Engineering Materials, 2023 This research was conducted to determine the corrosion rate by varying the concentration of the solution against hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. The method used is open circuit potential (OCP) and Tafel plot. Based on the research conducted, Hastelloy C-276 was more prone to get oxidized in sulfuric acid rather than hydrochloric acid. It can be seen from the OCP value of sulfuric acid was much more negative than that of hydrochloric acid as of-1.5 V for 0.5 M sulfuric acid and-0.2 V for hydrochloric acid. The corrosion rate of Hastelloy C-276 in sulfuric acid was also higher compared to same alloy in hydrochloric acid. At the most concentrated solution, 0.5 M, the corrosion rate of sulfuric acid reached 0.39 mmpy and as for corrosion cate in hydrochloric acid, only at 0.16 mmpy. It is thought that there was a difference of passive film composition for both solutions. Keywords: Hastelloy C-276, Corrosion, Hydrochloric acid, Sulfuric acid.
