    Abstract This study is aimed to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from Aloe barbadensis Miller leaf extract using the green synthesis method at room temperature. The biosynthesized NPs are characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The XRD pattern has revealed the hexagonal wurtzite structure with a crystallite size of 16 nm for synthesized ZnO NPs. The FTIR results display the formation of ZnO NPs and the presence of other functional groups. The UV–vis absorption spectrum shows an absorption band at 347 nm and the value of the bandgap is found to be 3.75 eV. The surface morphology of synthesized NPs is visualized by SEM images, it is observed that most of the NPs are needle in shape. Further, these NPs will find applications in biosensing and photocatalytic activity.
  • Role of Substituent Position in Coumarin Derivatives during their Interaction with TiO2 Nano Particles

    The effect of position of benzo group in coumarin derivatives, 5,6 benzo-4-azidomethyl coumarin (5BAMC) and 7,8 benzo-4-azidomethyl coumarin (7BAMC) during their interaction with TiO2 nanoparticles in ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, butan-1-ol and acetonitrile solvents has been studied using different spectroscopic methods and electrochemical analysis. Benesi-Hildebrand plots indicate that nature of interaction between 7BAMC and TiO2 is 1:2 in solvent with low dielectric constant whereas for 5BAMC and TiO2, it is 1:1 in all the solvents. From the fluorescence quenching study and binding equilibria analysis, it is observed that interaction between 5BAMC and TiO2 depends on the dielectric constant of the solvent. Time resolved quenching study reveals that quenching is dynamic for 5BAMC in solvent with high dielectric constant. Whereas for 7BAMC, it is dynamic in solvent with low dielectric constant. Hence the nature of interaction of these two coumarin derivatives with TiO2 NPs is different. From electrochemical analysis, it is observed that, free energy change for electron transfer is more negative for 5BAMC-TiO2 compared to 7BAMC-TiO2 therefore quenching is more efficient for 5BAMC-TiO2 compared to 7BAMC-TiO2 system, which is also confirmed from fluorescence quenching studies. Non-radiative energy transfer rate is more than radiative energy transfer rate for both the systems according to FRET study.

    Fluorescence investigations on interactions between 7,8-benzo-4-azidomethyl coumarin (7BAMC) and quenchers ortho-phenylenediamine (OPD) and para-phenylenediamines (PPD) in binary solvent mixtures (THF + water) have been reported. UV-absorption study indicated a weak hydrophobic interaction between 7BAMC and the para isomer. NMR spectral studies indicated the presence of an interaction between 7BAMC and PPD. Magnitudes of the parameters associated with FRET, showed the presence of interactions between 7BAMC and PPD quencher is more predominant than OPD. Fluorescence quenching studies reveal the role of static and dynamic quenching pathways, depending upon Stern–Volmer constant, dielectric constant and dominant non-radiative processes. Binding equilibria analysis indicates a strong interaction between 7BAMC and PPD than OPD and formation of H-bonding. Based on the magnitudes of free energy, enthalpy change and entropy, bimolecular interaction process may be considered as spontaneous and hydrophobic.

    A series of novel 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones 7 a-g were designed, synthesized and were characterized by IR, 1H & 13C NMR, MS, and elemental analysis. The optical and electrochemical properties have been studied using UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, life time and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Quantum yield and effect of solvents for the compounds 7 a-g were investigated. Density Functional Theory (DFT) computations have been carried out for all the synthesized compounds and the computed values found to be approximately in close agreement with the experimental results. Further, the compounds 7 a, 7 d, 7 f and 7 g were evaluated for their anticancer activity at National Cancer Institute, NIH, Bethesda, USA and have shown moderate to good anticancer activities.
