Urban Mobility Experiences and Perceived Stress Along a High-Intensity Corridor in a Mexican Border City Francisco Isaías Rivera-Meza, Jaime Wenceslao Parra-Moroyoqui, José Leonardo Jiménez-Ortiz, Omar Arodi Flores-Laguna, Guillermo Cano-Verdugo, et al. Future Transportation, 2026 Urban mobility is increasingly conceptualized as a multidimensional, user-centered domain of transport system evaluation with potential implications for population health. This study examined the association between user-reported urban mobility experiences and perceived stress among adults using a high-intensity corridor in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. A quantitative cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with 423 participants using the Urban Mobility Experiences Scale (UMES) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14). Spearman’s correlation analyses showed inverse associations between perceived stress and several mobility dimensions, although only Sustainability and Urban Environment remained statistically significant after Bonferroni correction (ρ = −0.266; p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, Sustainability and Urban Environment, Accessibility and Connectivity, and Travel Time and Efficiency were retained as significant predictors, jointly explaining 14.1% of the variance in perceived stress (R2 = 0.141; f2 = 0.152). These findings suggest that multidimensional urban mobility experiences, particularly environmental and accessibility conditions, are associated with perceived stress beyond traditional operational indicators in high-intensity urban corridors.
Effectiveness of the “Artistic Expression” Course in the Development of Soft Skills in Dentistry Students Micaela Abigail Moyoli‐Navarro, Renzo Soriano‐Salvador, Claudio Peña‐Soto, Guillermo Cano‐Verdugo Journal of Dental Education, 2026 IntroductionSoft skills (SS) are essential in dentistry, fostering effective communication, teamwork, and empathy. Artistic expression, through activities like theater and music, enhances these competencies. A private dentistry institution in Peru incorporated an “artistic expression” elective course to strengthen communication, critical thinking, and leadership in dental students. This study evaluates the course's effectiveness in developing SS, aiming to support art‐based strategies in dental education and promote well‐rounded professional training for improved patient care and interdisciplinary collaboration.MethodsAn analytical, longitudinal, pre‐experimental design was used, where the impact of the course was measured through a pre‐test and post‐test. The post‐test was administered immediately after the 16‐week course concluded. The questionnaire was validated through expert judgment, and a pilot test was conducted to ensure its reliability. The McNemar non‐parametric test was used in the study, and significance was obtained through a Spearman correlation.ResultsThe results showed a significant increase in positive responses between the pre‐test and post‐test, with significant differences in three items (11, 14, and 30): students indicated that they were able to manage conflicts, lead activities or projects, and remind peers of established times (p > 0.05). Additionally, a significant difference was observed in the intergroup analysis, with a tendency toward a high level in the post‐test (pre‐test: 28.67 ± 3.51 vs. post‐test: 30.03 ± 2.50; rho = 0.68), but without significant intragroup changes by application level, as well as in the dimensions of communication skills, leadership skills, and initiative, showing a moderate effect (p > 0.05).ConclusionThe findings suggest that the “Artistic Expression” course effectively contributes to the development of SS in future health professionals, which is crucial for their performance in the job market.
Psychometric Design and Validation of the Urban Mobility Experiences Scale Jaime Wenceslao Parra-Moroyoqui, Francisco Isaías Rivera-Meza, José Leonardo Jiménez-Ortiz, Omar Arodi Flores-Laguna, Guillermo Cano-Verdugo, et al. Urban Science, 2026 Urban mobility plays a key role in territorial equity, access to services, and population well-being, as unfavorable mobility experiences are associated with stress and physical and mental deterioration. However, in Latin American and border cities, validated instruments for comprehensively assessing these experiences remain scarce. This study aimed to design and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Urban Mobility Experiences Scale [UMES]. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 423 adults from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, selected through convenience sampling. The initial UMES consisted of 24 items distributed across five conceptual dimensions. Content validity was assessed by nine experts using Aiken’s V coefficient, while construct validity was examined through exploratory factor analysis with principal axis factoring and PROMAX rotation. Data adequacy was verified using the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin index and Bartlett’s test of sphericity. Internal consistency was estimated using McDonald’s Omega. All items demonstrated adequate content validity (V ≥ 0.80). Five factors were identified, explaining 53.6% of the total variance, with factor loadings above 0.40. Reliability was acceptable across all dimensions (ω ≥ 0.70), and overall internal consistency was high (ω = 0.912). The UMES is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing urban mobility experiences in intermediate and border cities and may inform evidence-based policies promoting equity, sustainability, and urban well-being.

Oral Health, Periodontal Status, and Cognitive Function in Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Analytical Pilot Study Norma Cruz-Fierro, Myriam Angélica de la Garza-Ramos, Sara Sáenz-Rangel, María Concepción Treviño Tijerina, Guillermo Cano-Verdugo, et al. Oral Health Diseases Therapies and Technologies, 2026 Background: Cognitive aging is a physiological process that involves gradual and mild changes in mental functions. When these changes significantly affect cognitive performance, it is considered cognitive decline. Objective: This analytical cross-sectional pilot study examined the association between periodontal status, systemic conditions, and cognitive performance in middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Forty adults aged 35–59 years (n = 20) and ≥60 years (n = 20) from northeastern Mexico were evaluated. Oral assessments included the Modified Gingival Index and detection of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum using qPCR. Cognitive function was evaluated with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and frailty with the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and Oral Frailty Checklist (OF-5). Systemic medical history and oral hygiene habits were determined using a questionnaire. Results: MMSE scores were lower in older adults compared with middle-aged adults, and the magnitude of the difference was small. The presence of P. gingivalis or F. nucleatum was similar between groups. Frailty indicators were more prevalent in older adults. Logistic regression identified age and frailty-related variables as the strongest predictors of lower cognitive performance, whereas microbiological findings were not significant predictors. Conclusions: Age and frailty indicators, rather than bacterial presence alone, were associated with reduced cognitive performance in this pilot sample. Although no microbiological differences were observed, the findings highlight the need for larger analytical studies incorporating quantitative bacterial load and additional confounders to better understand the oral–systemic–cognitive interactions.
Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of viral infections in acute apical abscesses José Ángel Hernández-Mariano, Gustavo Adolfo Sánchez-Ramírez, Guillermo Cano-Verdugo, Myriam Angélica De la Garza-Ramos, Martín Andrés Chávez- Méndez, et al. Bdj Open, 2025 Background There is no current consensus on the presence of viral infections in acute apical abscesses; therefore, this protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis is designed to detail the procedures required to investigate the prevalence of viral infections in acute apical abscesses, a common dental condition characterized by pus accumulation due to bacterial infection. Viral infections in oral tissues have been linked to systemic health risks, including chronic inflammation and oncogenesis, which further emphasize the importance of understanding their role in acute apical abscesses. Methods/design We adopted a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol design followed by PRISMA guidelines. A priori protocol was registered in PROSPERO with registry number: CRD42023468287. Inclusion criteria will be established according to the PICO framework; hence, we will include original articles with no restriction on publication date or population group. The selective screening of information will be conducted by peers, starting with titles, abstracts, and keywords, and finally reviewing the full text. The risk of bias will be assessed using the ROBINS tool, and the certainty of the evidence will be evaluated following the GRADE guidelines. We will perform a random-effects meta-analysis, utilizing the Freeman-Tukey double arcsine transformation, to estimate the pooled prevalence of viral infections in acute apical abscesses, assess heterogeneity using the Q-test and I² statistic, evaluate potential publication bias with funnel plots and Egger’s test, and conduct sensitivity analyses to ensure robust results. Discussion At present, no consensus exists regarding the prevalence of viral infections in acute apical abscesses that could inform clinical dental practice. Moreover, the existing body of knowledge on this subject is notably limited. This approach is intended to provide data that will facilitate the improvement of clinical practice and serve as a methodological framework for studying various pathologies. By elucidating the prevalence of viral infections, the findings of this study could enhance diagnostic accuracy and inform more targeted and effective treatment strategies, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
