Anthropometric and Biochemical Correlates of Sarcopenia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients Aged Over 40 Years: An Observational Study Sanjay T. Thorat, Virendra C. Patil Journal of Diabetology, 2026 Background: Sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, is a growing complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, its link with glycemic control, particularly in younger patients, remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia in T2DM and examine its association with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 157 T2DM patients aged >40 years. Sarcopenia was assessed using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. The appendicular skeletal muscle mass, handgrip strength, Five-Time Sit-to-Stand Test, anthropometric, and laboratory parameters were analyzed. The statistical analyses included t -tests, chi-square tests, and receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results: Sarcopenic patients had lower body mass index ( P < 0.001), waist circumference ( P < 0.001), and low handgrip strength ( P = 0.012) and reduced calf circumference ( P < 0.001). HbA1c showed no association ( P = 0.209, area under the curve = 0.453) with sarcopenia. The serum creatinine and blood urea levels were positively correlated with appendicular skeletal muscle mass ( r = 0.204, P < 0.05) and skeletal muscle index ( r = 0.182, P < 0.05), whereas hand grip strength was correlated positively with blood urea ( r = 0.161, P < 0.05). Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was significantly lower in females with longer diabetes duration (≥5 years) compared with those with duration <5 years, and a trend ( P = 0.06) of lower eGFR was noted in females with higher HbA1c (≥8). Conclusion: The study revealed that neither glycemic control nor renal function markers are linked to sarcopenia in the relatively younger diabetic cohort (40–60 years). However, the handgrip strength and calf circumference served as good indicators of sarcopenia, suggesting the clinical utility of simple bed-site measures.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in Subjects with Metabolic Syndrome Virendra C. Patil, Aniket Pathade, Ashish Bhagat, Harsha Virendra Patil, Shivamsh R. Kasireddy Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University, 2026 Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is recognized to have a strong association with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is recognized as a major cause of liver-related mortality and morbidity. Aims and Objectives: This study aims to study NAFLD in subjects with MetS and to compare them with subjects without MetS. Materials and Methods: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional observational study done on subjects with and without MetS in a tertiary care hospital over a period of 6 months from October 2020 to March 2021. Enrolled subjects underwent ultrasonography, point shear wave elastography (pSWE), fasting blood sugar (F-BSL), postprandial blood sugar, HbA1c, fasting lipid profile, and LFTs. Appropriate statistical tests were applied for analysis and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age was 50.98 (standard deviation [SD] ±14.80) in those without MetS and 50.88 (SD ± 14.46) with MetS. Mean pSWE elasticity was 3.08 kPa (SD ± 1.77) in those without MetS and 6.00 kPa (SD ± 3.86) with MetS. Mean waist circumference was 79.34 cm (SD ± 12.41) in those without MetS and 103.22 cm (SD ± 9.88) with MetS. A substantial association was noted in the occurrence of fibrosis with the presence of MetS and its components ( P < 0.0001). Conclusion: The presence of NAFLD by shear wave elastography was significantly higher in subjects with MetS than in subjects without. It is suggested that eligible subjects with MetS should be screened for the presence of NAFLD to halt the disease progress by early intervention.
Clinical Profile, Laboratory Profile, and Outcome of Organophosphorus Poisoning at Tertiary Care Hospital Virendra Chandrashekhar Patil, Shital Telrandhe, Laxmikant Bharat Umate, Nikhilesh Iranna Rayannavar, Harsha Virendra Patil Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University, 2026 Background: Organophosphorus (OP) is reachable pesticide which has a high morbidity. There is limited information available on acute poisoning in the study area. Aim of the Study: To study the clinical profile, laboratory profile and outcome of organophosphorus poisoning at tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 individuals with organo-phosphorus poisoning were enrolled in this study and were categorized (mild, moderate, and severe poisoning groups) based on peradeniya organophosphorus poisoning (POP) score. Their serum cholinesterase (SChE) levels at the time of admission were sent and categorized into three groups. The POP score, SChE levels were analyzed to find their association with mortality, ventilator support, and duration of hospital stay. Results: Of 100 patients with organophosphorus (OP) poisoning, a majority of 36% subjects were aged between 21 and 30 years (66% males and 34% females), with a male-to-female ratio of 1.9:1. Chlorpyriphos (59%) was the most common type of poisoning followed by dimethoate (16%). A majority (46%) had mild, 38% had moderate, and 16% had severe poisoning. The overall mortality was 14%, mortality in patients requiring ventilator was 21.5% and the case fatality rates for were high in severe poisoning (62.5%). Conclusion: A higher POP score and a significant decrease in SCh-E levels were associated with increase in the duration of hospital stay, severity of poisoning, need of ventilator, and poor outcome.
