Hydrogenolysis of Benzyl Phenyl Ether Using Nickel–Molybdenum Clay Catalysts—A Model for Cleaving Ether Linkages in Lignin Indri B. Adilina, Muhammad A. Fitriady, Ferensa Oemry, Fauzan Aulia, Nino Rinaldi, Gagus K. Sunnardianto, Ian P. Silverwood, Stewart F. Parker Catalysts, 2024 The solvent-free hydrogenolysis (HDL) of benzyl phenyl ether (BPE), a model for the C–O (α-O-4) linkage in lignin, was investigated using NiMo-pillared clay catalysts in their reduced (NiMoPR) and sulfided (NiMoPS) forms. NiMoPS show higher activity and selectivity to give an equimolar mixture of toluene and phenol, demonstrating selective cleavage of the Caliphatic–O of BPE, while non-equimolar amounts were found for NiMoPR. Strong acid sites are dominant in NiMoPS, giving a higher total acidity compared to NiMoPR, which explains the higher selectivity of the sulfided catalyst towards the HDL products and monomeric aromatics. To understand the interaction of BPE on the catalyst surface, we carried out a comprehensive investigation of the 2D potential energy surface (PES) of BPE and the vibrational spectra using neutron scattering and computational studies. The results suggest that BPE is weakly adsorbed on NiMoPS and the pillared clay support (PILC) via a van der Waals or H-bonding interaction, but they are strongly chemisorbed on the NiMoPR due to covalent bonding. Weakly adsorbed BPE allows higher mobility during diffusion to the catalytic site, which promotes the higher activity of NiMoPS for the HDL. This work demonstrates the potential use of clay-supported NiMo catalysts for lignin valorization and the future circular economy.
Hybrid Biopellets Characterization of Gamal Wood (Gliricidia sepium) and Robusta Coffee Husk at Various Compositions Mangifera Indica Dhaifullah Wangun Putri, Rio Ardiansyah Murda, Sena Maulana, Eti Artiningsih Octaviani, Nurika Arum Sari, Mhd Muhajir Hasibuan, Fauzan Aulia, Wahyu Hidayat Jurnal Sylva Lestari, 2024 Biopellets from gamal wood (Gliricidia sepium) as a biomass energy resource could be an alternative to replace fossil fuels due to having met standards based on moisture content, ash content, fixed carbon, calorific value, and density. Unfortunately, they still had high levels of volatile matter. Robusta coffee husk was a material with high nitrogen content, which is suspected of being able to bind aromatic substances in volatile organic compounds. This study aims to evaluate the quality of biopellets and determine the optimum composition of the biopellets from gamal wood and coffee husk. The blended composition of gamal wood and coffee husk biopellets studied were 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. The biopellets were manufactured using the material size of 40-60 mesh with a pressure of 173.51 MPa. The best biopellet was produced in the composition of 75% gamal wood and 25% coffee husk, with a density of 0.85 g/cm3, moisture content of 8.03%, ash content of 3.92%, volatile substances of 78.01%, fixed carbon of 18.07%, and calorific value of 4,176 cal/g. The biopellet quality met the standards of SNI 8021:2014 and EN 14061-2, except for ash content. Adding coffee husk reduced gamal wood biopellet’s volatile matter, increasing the fixed carbon and density of gamal wood biopellets. Sol-gel synthesis of zirconia-based nanoparticles from the side product of tin mining Anis Kristiani, Wiyono, Arif Prasetiyo, Himawan Tri Bayu Murti Petrus, Siti Nurul Aisyiyah Jenie, Adid Adep Dwiatmoko, Luthfiana Nurul Hidayati, Fauzan Aulia, Sudiyarmanto, Deliana Dahnum E3s Web of Conferences, 2024 Indonesia has been one of the world’s primary source of tin since the early of 19th century. Bangka island has the largest tin abundant with a side product is zircon sand (ZrSiO4). The existence of zircon (ZrSiO4) is mostly associated with some of the valuable oxide compounds (VOC) and rare earth oxides (REO). The zirconia powders were synthesized from the zircon sand of PT. Timah Tbk by caustic fusion method followed by sol-gel method. The raw material zircon sand and as-synthesized zirconia were characterized through x-ray fluorescence (XRF), x-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area analysis and porositymeter, thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analysis (TG-DSC), fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results show that zircon sand from PT Timah Tbk contains some of VOCs, such as ZrSiO4, ZrO2, HfO2, SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, Fe2O3 and some REOs, such as La2O3, Y2O3, Nb2O5. The fusion temperatures varied from 600 to 800 °C which resulted in an increase of the purity of ZrO2 to 76% based on the XRF analysis. The surface area analysis and porositymeter results showed the significant change in specific surface area, pore size and pore volume of as-synthesized zirconia. The specific surface area increased dramatically from 0.28 m2/g to 173.97, 125.18, and 102.14 m2/g, at fusion temperatures of 600, 700, and 800 °C, respectively. The average particle size of as-synthesized zirconia showed the significant change from 21.31μm to 34.48 nm. The results of this work open new opportunities for the development of zirconia-based nanoparticles from the side product of tin mining.
