Regeneration of Spent Bleaching Earth by Calcination and Its Morphological Enhancement via KOH Impregnation Ika Kusuma Nugraheni, Jaka Darma Jaya, Nuryati Nuryati, Sunardi Sunardi, Utami Irawati, Putri Iis Faiza, Dita Adi Saputra Indonesian Journal of Chemistry, 2026 Spent bleaching earth (SBE), a waste generated from palm oil bleaching, contains residual oil and organic matter that block its pore structure and pose environmental disposal concerns. Regeneration of SBE is therefore essential to enable its reutilization. In this study, SBE was regenerated by calcination and further modified via KOH impregnation at concentrations of 1.00, 0.10, and 0.01 M. The regenerated materials were characterized using XRF, SEM, TEM, XRD, and BET surface area analysis. Calcination combined with 0.10 M KOH impregnation increased the surface area from 8.70 to 93.81 m2/g, approaching the value of activated bleaching earth (94.29 m2/g), and significantly altered pore volume and pore size distribution. These findings indicate that calcination restores the basic structure of SBE, while subsequent KOH impregnation enhances its morphological properties, highlighting the potential of regenerated SBE as a low-cost adsorbent or catalyst support.
Effect of Catalyst Bed Arrangement on the Conversion of Processed Palm Oil into Bio-Jet Fuel Using Co/ZSM-5 Catalyst Pangestu Arum Pratiwi, Triyono Triyono, Wega Trisunaryanti, Adyatma Bhagaskara, Dita Adi Saputra Indonesian Journal of Chemistry, 2026 The growing demand for sustainable aviation fuels has driven the development of efficient catalyst materials. This study aimed to investigate the physicochemical properties of the Co/ZSM-5 catalyst, evaluate the effect of catalyst bed arrangement (single- and double-bed configurations) on catalytic performance, and assess its reusability for converting processed palm oil into bio-jet fuel. The catalyst was analyzed using XRD, FTIR, Raman, SAA, NH3-TPD, XPS, and SEM-EDX instruments. The experiment was conducted in a semi-batch reactor equipped with a dual furnace. The hydrotreatment process was carried out at temperatures ranging from 200 to 550 °C with an H2 flow rate of 20 mL/min for 3 h. The liquid product was analyzed by GC-MS and FTIR, while the spent catalyst was characterized by SEM-EDX mapping. The results showed that the catalyst exhibited good crystallinity, a moderate surface area, a suitable pore structure, strong acidity, and a stable cobalt dispersion. Catalyst activity tests revealed bio-jet fuel yields of 48.17% for the single-bed Co/ZSM-5 catalyst and 51.74% for the double-bed arrangement, highlighting the significant influence of bed arrangement effect on product yield and selectivity. After three reusability cycles, both single- and double-bed Co/ZSM-5 catalysts demonstrated consistent yields with relatively stable selectivity.
Synergistic NiS/CuO heterostructures as two-in-one catalysts for dye removal and bacterial inactivation Lathifah Puji Hastuti, Abdul Hamid Budiman, Oka Pradipta Arjasa, Desinta Dwi Ristiana, Muhammad Dikdik Gumelar, Dita Adi Saputra, Sri Rahayu, Saddam Husin, Hariaman Prasetyo International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, 2026 This study reports the synthesis of NiS/CuO nanocomposites via a hydrothermal method, forming a p – p homojunction that reduces the band gap to 2.4 eV and enhances visible-light absorption. XRD confirmed mixed α-NiS and β-NiS phases with high crystallinity, while FE-SEM showed random morphology in both NiS and the composite, with some rod-like structures in NiS. EDX and elemental mapping verified successful compositing of CuO and NiS with a relatively uniform distribution. The composite achieved ~ 100% degradation of Methylene Blue (MB), 78% of Brilliant Green (BG), and 35% of Methyl Orange (MO), outperforming pure NiS. MB degradation followed Langmuir – Hinshelwood pseudo-first-order kinetics (R2 = 0.9649, k = 0.0328 min− 1), and the material retained over 80% activity after three cycles. Antibacterial testing against Escherichia coli revealed a MIC of 5 mg/mL and MBC of 10 mg/mL. These results demonstrate the potential of NiS/CuO nanocomposites as stable, dual-functional agents for photocatalytic and antimicrobial wastewater treatment.
Upcycling secondary nickel from spent nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries as a nanocatalyst on sulfated natural zeolite for converting LDPE plastic waste into jet-fuel hydrocarbons Adyatma Bhagaskara, Karna Wijaya, Wega Trisunaryanti, Dita Adi Saputra, Agustanhankri Agustanhakri, Galih Taqwatomo, Oka Pradipta Arjasa, Abdul Hamid Budiman, Mahendra Anggaravidya Next Materials, 2025 This research investigates the potential of using the secondary nickel metals as the nanocatalyst in sulfated natural zeolite (Ni/SNZ) derived from spent Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries for the catalytic conversion of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastic waste into jet-fuel range hydrocarbon. The synthesis process involved extracting Ni metals from spent NMC cathode using phosphoric acid-oxalic acid and purifying natural zeolite, followed by sulfation and nickel loading to enhance catalytic properties. The catalytic performance was evaluated in a semibatch microreactor, where the LDPE feedstock was subjected to pyrolysis in the presence of the Ni/SNZ nanocatalyst. The results demonstrated a significant conversion of LDPE to jet-fuel range hydrocarbons, with a substantial fraction falling within the jet-fuel range (C6-C18) with liquid conversion and selectivity up to 50.02 % and 45.90 %. Additionally, the nanocatalyst exhibited high stability. This study highlights the dual benefit of addressing plastic waste management and recycling valuable metals from spent batteries, presenting an innovative approach towards sustainable development and circular economy.
Modification of mesoporous zirconia using phosphoric acid and calcium oxide as a bifunctional nano-catalyst for one-pot conversion of used palm cooking oil into biodiesel Eduard Christria Sambara, Aldino Javier Saviola, Akhmad Syoufian, Riska Astin Fitria, Aisyah Mumtaziyah, Kharistya Rozana, Won-Chun Oh, Balasubramani Ravindran, Wahyu Dita Saputri, Amalia Kurnia Amin, Dita Adi Saputra, Sri Rahayu, Karna Wijaya Next Materials, 2025 This study successfully synthesized a novel bifunctional nano-catalyst, phosphated mesoporous zirconia impregnated with calcium oxide (CaO/PO₄–MZ), and applied it for the conversion of used palm cooking oil, which had a free fatty acid (FFA) content of 2.65 % m/v, into biodiesel. The resulting CaO/PO₄–MZ nano-catalyst exhibited a total acidity of 1.93 mmol/g, a total basicity of 0.38 mmol/g, a specific surface area of 7.867 m²/g, a total pore volume of 0.035 cm³ /g, and an average pore diameter of 3.621 nm. Under optimized reaction conditions (reaction time = 3 h, catalyst dosage = 4 wt%, and methanol-to-oil molar ratio = 21:1), the nano-catalyst achieved a biodiesel yield of 86.49 % with a selectivity of 97.48 %. It outperformed mesoporous zirconia (MZ), phosphated mesoporous zirconia (PO₄–MZ), calcium oxide-impregnated mesoporous zirconia (CaO/MZ), and a sequential two-pot system using PO₄–MZ followed by CaO/MZ. Additionally, the nano-catalyst demonstrated good reusability, maintaining a 61.28 % yield after five cycles. Optimization using response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite design (CCD) predicted an optimum biodiesel yield of 86.53 % under a reaction time of 3.17 h, a catalyst dosage of 4.04 wt%, and a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 20.53:1, with an R² value of 0.9992. These findings highlight the potential of one-pot biodiesel production from used palm cooking oil as an efficient and environmentally friendly route for sustainable biofuel technologies.
